不戒（方虎 飾）乃威震八方的銅頭鐵羅漢，這日他奉明惠法師差遣，攜帶信物，前往開元寺迎取稀世珍寶《釋源真經》。消息傳出，各路英豪俠士紛紛出動，都想獨霸真經，稱雄江湖。不戒在酒館路遇黑龍會二爺，打鬥中遺失佛珠，被行商（徐學禮 飾）撿得，縱惡徒索要明惠法師的親筆度牒。在帶發修行的村姑相助下，不戒安然脫險。在山神廟中，不戒識破前來搶度牒的旱地雷（解衍 飾）和花麵狐（高鴻萍 飾）投毒詭計，讓他倆自食其藥。不戒一路凶險來到開元寺，行商派來的智聰（呂偉 飾）也己到此，兩人各持信物，方丈（吳喜千 飾）難辯真假，後經設計層層障礙，方丈才將真經交與不戒......
